A window and door company can consider pergolas as an adjacent product when its customers also need terrace shade or outdoor living improvements. Existing measuring and installation skills help, but pergolas add foundations, roof drainage, structural exposure and controls. Start with a supported pilot and a clear division of responsibilities.
Look for demand in your existing enquiries
Begin with customers replacing patio doors, adding large glazed openings or renovating a terrace. Ask whether glare, rain at the threshold or lack of usable outdoor space is also a concern. Those conversations show whether there is a connected need; they do not guarantee that every door buyer wants a pergola.
Review your own enquiry records before building a large range. Identify a small set of use cases you can survey and deliver well. A pergola placed beside a new sliding door may be a useful proposal only if the roof height, post positions and daylight effects are coordinated.
Which skills transfer, and which need support?
Accurate measurement, installation scheduling, finish coordination and working around existing facades are relevant skills. However, a pergola needs its own approved structural and drainage design. Window installation experience does not by itself establish the capacity of a wall connection, slab or foundation.
Map the extra responsibilities: local structural review, groundworks, lifting or handling, electrical connection and commissioning. Use qualified partners where necessary. Ask for installation videos and model-specific material so your team can review the system before the pilot order.
Survey the door and pergola as one interface
Measure door head height, opening movement, shutters, eaves and nearby downpipes. Check whether the proposed beam blocks the opening or reduces daylight in the room. If side glass is considered, coordinate tracks, drainage and the finished floor rather than adding it as an isolated product later.
Keep a separate distinction between a freestanding arrangement beside the house and a frame attached to it. A convenient wall surface is not evidence that it can carry the connection. Record who will verify the existing structure and detail weatherproofing.
Build a first project you can repeat
Choose a project with defined dimensions, accessible installation conditions and a customer who understands the scope. Confirm drawings, order details, local tasks and the handover process before manufacture. Document the installation sequence and any questions that your sales team should ask earlier next time.
JY Home Shade orders can start from one set, and paid samples are available with installation videos and product material. Use the first order to test your quoting and delivery process before expanding. Ask separately about branding or partner terms; those are not automatically granted by a product purchase.
Before you commit
| Decision area | Information to confirm |
|---|---|
| Existing strength | Measuring openings and understanding customer renovation plans. |
| New survey item | Post zones, roof level, foundations and discharge points. |
| Specialist interface | Structural review, facade connection and power installation. |
| Sales package | Clearly separate doors, pergola, site work and accessories. |
| Pilot outcome | Record a repeatable survey, installation and service process. |
Your next-step checklist
- Select a real terrace enquiry with a clear customer need.
- Check door clearance and indoor daylight before proposing size.
- Identify the local structural, foundation and electrical responsibilities.
- Request a pilot quotation with model-specific installation documents.
Questions buyers ask
Can we use our existing window installation team?
Some skills transfer, but the team must review the pergola system and identify work requiring additional expertise or qualified partners. Do not assume the scopes are identical.
Can the pergola use our own sliding glass?
Compatibility needs review of openings, tracks, loads, fixing points and drainage. Send the proposed glass-system details before confirming the pergola configuration.
