What thermal expansion describes
Thermal expansion is a change in material dimensions with temperature. For a freely moving member, the simplified relationship is length change = expansion coefficient × original length × temperature change. This describes free movement; it does not calculate the forces in a restrained frame.
Hydro lists a linear expansion coefficient of 23.1 × 10⁻⁶/K for its EN AW-6082 extruded product data. Using that value only as an illustration, a 6 m freely expanding member with a 40°C temperature rise would lengthen by about 5.5 mm. This is not a JY alloy specification, installation clearance or design allowance. Actual material and temperature assumptions must be established for the project.
Why an illustration is not an installation gap
A fabricated pergola is an assembly of connected members, supports, seals and moving parts. The way those pieces are connected determines where movement can occur. Fixing both ends, sharing a post or attaching to a building changes the question from a free bar to an assembled system.
Do not add slots, loosen bolts or enlarge holes using the illustrative calculation. Request the intended connection detail and installation tolerances from the supplier. Any movement provision must also work with the structure, weather management and roof mechanism.
Coordinate glass, screens and adjacent construction
Prepare an interface schedule identifying the frame, glass tracks, screen guides and nearby building finishes. Ask each supplier to confirm the permitted installation conditions for its own component. A frame dimension on a drawing is not enough to approve an independently sourced enclosure.
Show finished levels, fixing faces and service access in the same drawing package. If a glass supplier changes a track or a screen supplier changes a guide, ask whether the approved interface needs revision. Avoid filling an unfamiliar opening with sealant until its function has been confirmed.
What to document during installation and handover
Ask the installer to record the approved drawing revision, installed configuration and any departures requiring acceptance. Keep supplier instructions for connections, tracks and seals with the handover documents. This gives a useful baseline for later service questions.
If operation changes between cool mornings and warm afternoons, record the conditions, affected bay and symptom. Temperature may be relevant, but it is not a diagnosis: alignment, damage or other causes may need assessment. Do not force the roof or alter its fixings in an attempt to create movement clearance.
Questions for the project review
Ask which material reference supports the design, how connections accommodate the intended behaviour, and who confirms compatibility with side enclosures. Request the applicable installation instructions rather than a generic promise that aluminum can expand safely.
For a quotation, send the location, proposed layout, mounting type and planned glass or screens. Flag interfaces with existing walls and floor finishes. The useful outcome is a coordinated drawing and responsibility schedule, not an unsupported gap dimension.
Buyer questions
Should every pergola have the same expansion gap?
No. The assembly, materials, connections and site conditions determine the appropriate detail.
Does a small thermal movement mean the frame is defective?
Not by itself. Evaluate the installed assembly and observed behaviour against its approved design and operating requirements.
