Keep width and projection separate
Label width along the mounting side and projection outward over the patio on your sketch. Ask the supplier exactly which points define the quoted dimensions: an overall assembly size and a usable fabric area should not be treated as interchangeable without checking.
Write the units next to every measurement. Include the proposed mounting location rather than sending a single area in square metres. A narrow, deep seating area and a wide, shallow one can have the same floor area while needing different arrangements.
Measure the occupied area, including pulled-out chairs
Arrange the furniture as you normally use it. Mark the table, occupied chairs and route to the garden. If the space serves a restaurant, include the serving route and the position of chairs when guests are seated.
Decide whether the aim is to shade the table, every seat or a larger lounge zone. This avoids choosing an extension based only on the patio edge while overlooking the place where people actually sit. Keep a separate note of the circulation area; a shaded footprint is not a furniture plan.
Check shade at the times you intend to use it
The extended awning footprint is not a fixed outline of the shadow on the ground. Visit the patio at the relevant time, record where direct sun reaches the seats and mark the sun-facing side on your photos.
A deeper overhead cover should not be assumed to solve low sun entering from the side. For a daylight-sensitive room behind the patio, also compare the view from inside with the awning extended and retracted. Ask for a site-specific assessment when shade at particular hours is central to the project.
Record the mounting zone and nearby obstructions
Photograph the whole wall and close views of the proposed fixing area. Include doors, opening windows, downpipes, lights, roof edges and any other items that may interact with the assembly. Note the intended mounting height and where the front edge would sit when extended.
Do not select fixing hardware from a photograph or treat decorative cladding as confirmed structural support. Have the mounting arrangement checked for the actual wall and awning. The product supplier and local installer should agree which measurements and site details each party confirms.
If considering a cassette awning, ask what the housing encloses and how its position affects the installation. Cassette describes the housing arrangement, not a universal dimension or performance rating.
Send a small measurement pack, not just a target size
- A front photo and a side photo of the installation area.
- A sketch showing proposed width, outward projection and mounting height.
- The furniture layout, door movements and nearby obstacles.
- Project location, orientation and the hours when shade is needed.
- Quantity, fabric preference and manual or motorized operation preference.
- Any dimensions or wall details that still require an installer to verify.
Ask the response to identify the proposed system, dimension references, fixing requirements and operating limits. Confirm the final measurements and commercial scope before ordering.
Use the retractable awning enquiry page to discuss the configuration. If the support layout does not fit your patio, compare an awning with a pergola before changing the requested size.
Questions buyers ask
Should the awning be as wide as the whole patio?
Not necessarily. Start with the seating area you want to shade and the available mounting zone. Confirm the actual shade at the intended times and the dimensions supported by the proposed system.
Does greater projection always give the shade I need?
No. Sun direction, mounting position and time of use affect the shaded area. Low-angle sunlight from the side may require a different approach rather than simply increasing projection.
Can I request an estimate with approximate measurements?
Yes, start a discussion with clearly labelled provisional dimensions and photos. Ask which assumptions are being used and which final measurements the supplier or installer needs before an order can be confirmed.
