A complete pergola finish brief should state the site exposure, substrate and pretreatment expectation, powder system, color reference, gloss or texture, approved sample, batch-matching requirement, visible quality criteria, cleaning plan and repair process. A RAL color number alone does not describe coating performance.
What a finish specification needs to define
| Layer of the decision | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Inland, urban, industrial, coastal, poolside, high-UV, dust or snow | Sets the conditions the finish and maintenance plan must address |
| Preparation | Proposed surface preparation and pretreatment process | Coating performance depends on more than the visible powder layer |
| Powder system | Product reference and supporting project documentation | Identifies what is actually proposed rather than using a generic label |
| Appearance | Color code, gloss range, texture and approved physical sample | Controls the visual expectation under real light |
| Production | Batch strategy, masking points and touch-up procedure | Reduces mismatch and unclear repair methods |
| Care | Cleaning frequency, method and inspection records | Exposure and maintenance both affect long-term condition |
Why a RAL code is not enough
A RAL reference is useful for naming a color, but it does not define pretreatment, resin chemistry, film build, cure, gloss, texture, batch or exposure. Two samples with the same nominal color can look different under daylight because their gloss, texture, powder batch or substrate differs. If adjacent pergola modules must match, ask how the production batches will be controlled and retain an approved physical sample.
Describe the actual environment
Do not specify only a country or city. State whether the pergola is inland or close to the sea, sheltered or rooftop-exposed, beside a swimming pool, near industrial pollution, subject to blowing sand, or difficult to wash. Also record the expected cleaning access and frequency. A seafront restaurant operating every day has a different maintenance reality from a sheltered residential patio.
Questions for coastal, poolside and high-UV projects
- What pretreatment and powder system is proposed for the stated exposure?
- Which coating product reference and batch information can be recorded?
- How are cut edges, drainage holes, fasteners and moving interfaces handled?
- Which components use a different material or finish?
- What cleaning method and frequency does the finish provider recommend?
- How should transport or installation damage be photographed and repaired?
- Which documents support any named coating specification or quality label?
Approve a sample that represents the order
A useful sample should record the color reference, powder product if available, gloss or texture, date and approval status. View it in daylight and beside nearby facade materials. Screen displays and catalogue chips are not reliable final approval tools. For a phased project, discuss whether later batches need a fresh approval against the retained sample.
Finish checks from factory to installation
- Confirm the written finish schedule before production.
- Protect visible surfaces and long profiles during packing and handling.
- Record package condition before unloading.
- Inspect for impact, abrasion or missing protection before assembly.
- Avoid dragging profiles or contaminating surfaces with site materials.
- Document damage before any touch-up work.
- Use the agreed cleaning and repair method rather than an improvised product.
Reference framework
QUALICOAT publishes specifications for coated aluminum used in architectural applications. If a quotation names QUALICOAT, another standard or a licensed process, ask for project-relevant evidence and verify exactly what product, applicator and scope the claim covers. This guide does not state that every finish or order carries a particular license.
Frequently asked questions
Is a RAL color code a complete specification?
No. It is a color reference and must be combined with exposure, preparation, powder, gloss, texture, sample and care requirements.
Is powder-coated aluminum corrosion-proof?
No finish is universally corrosion-proof or maintenance-free. Design details, fabrication, exposure, damage and cleaning all matter.
Can different orders show small color differences?
Yes. Batch, powder, gloss, texture, substrate and lighting can affect appearance, so important matching should be controlled with physical samples and a production plan.
What should a coastal buyer ask first?
Describe the salt exposure and cleaning access, then request the proposed coating process, hardware approach, care instructions and supporting documents.
Color images and samples describe appearance, not structural or environmental performance. Confirm the exact finish proposal and maintenance conditions for each project and keep the approved records with the order.
